I spotted this cake stand at Pier One last week and fell in love. After admiring it for a bit, I initially walked away, thinking that I had no room for a cake stand right now considering I don't even have my own kitchen. After a few minutes, I quickly backtracked and picked it up. As long as you can afford it, I believe in buying things you love when you find them - even if you don't have the perfect use/space in mind right away. If you love something, you'll find a way to use it. Plus - if I wait until I need something, I always have a hard time finding what I'm looking for!
A cake stand can have tons of uses beyond just holding cakes (admittedly, a delicious use). Right now, I'm using mine on my dresser to display my ever expanding collection of Essie polishes. I change my nail colour constantly, so having all my options on display is actually pretty useful.
Here are some other non-cake-holding cake stand options:
On a console in your entryway to hold mail/keys/etc:
On your vanity to hold perfumes and other pretty accoutrement:
On your dresser or vanity to display pretty jewelry:
Or in your kitchen, to hold frequently used spices and oils:
You can use a cake stand for pretty much anything. I think the key is to be flexible in your thinking. Items don't have to have just one use, and when you think more flexibly about the purpose of various items, you can come up with some pretty creative options, finding a way to display the things you love everyday. Here are some cute cake stands I've found:
